The Gospel of John: Expository Sermon #48
No More Middle Ground, Be Totally Tilted Toward Jesus [Restoring Holiness and Clearing the Gray Zones]
John 12:37-50
Sermon Notes & Reflection Guide
1. Listening to the Word
- What is the fundamental reason the Jews were unable to believe, even after witnessing so many signs? (vv. 37–40)
- What does the spiritual condition of the officials reveal about those who hid their faith out of fear of being expelled from the synagogue? (vv. 42–43)
- What commonality do the people who were called “disciples” in John 6 but later turned away share with the “officials” in today’s passage?
- According to Jesus, what is the criterion for judgment on the last day? (v. 48)
2. Questions for Understanding the Passage
- How are the “hardening” in Isaiah 6 and the “choice” in Joshua 24 connected? In the realm of faith, what is the part we must decisively choose?
- Why does John use such strong expressions, such as “the illusion of unbelief” or “children of the devil,” when speaking of those who linger around the light, fascinated by miracles but unwilling to truly believe?
- In contrast to the officials who feared excommunication, what distinguishes the man born blind who proclaimed Jesus even after being cast out (John 9), and Nicodemus, who moved from being a believer in the night to a witness in the light?
- Why did Jesus cry out loudly in verses 44–50, and what is the “command that leads to eternal life” that He proclaimed?
3. Questions for Application
- In my own spiritual life, where is the “gray area” in which I am compromising, thinking, “This is probably enough”? (e.g., relationships, finances, hobbies, use of time)
- Do I love human approval and reputation (the glory of people) more than God’s approval (the glory of God)?
- Following the 2026 vision, “Holiness Is Power,” what concrete decision must I make today to decisively shift the center of my life away from the world and firmly toward Jesus?
4. Sharing Together
- Let us share moments of grace or difficulty we experienced when we were not ashamed to be called “a Jesus follower” and openly identified ourselves as Christians in the world.
- Let us discuss how we can encourage and build one another up throughout the year 2026 for the “restoration of holiness.”
5. Prayer
- Lord, forgive us for the gray areas of our lives in which we hovered around the light while seeking human glory. Help us to lay down all our unbelief from 2025 at the foot of the cross.
- Teach us to fear Your judgment more than the retaliation of the world, and grant us holy resolve to live lives that are decisively centered on Jesus in every circumstance.
- In 2026, may the members of Double Blessing Church prove through their lives that “holiness is power,” and become messengers of light who shine the gospel to the nations.
