The Gospel of John: Expository Sermon #49

Topic: Jesus on His Knees

Passage: John 13:1-11

Sermon Notes & Reflection Guide

1. Listening to the Word

  • (As you listen to the sermon, freely write down any words, phrases, or insights that speak to your heart.)

2. Questions for Understanding the Passage

  • In John 13:1, what does it mean that Jesus “loved them to the end”? What did Jesus already know about the disciples’ future (such as betrayal and denial), and yet chose to love them in this way?
  • When Peter refused to have his feet washed, Jesus said, “Unless I wash you, you have no ( ) with Me.” (v. 8) What does this statement mean?
  • In verse 10, Jesus distinguishes between “one who has bathed” and “washing the feet.” Spiritually speaking, what does each of these represent?

3. Questions for Application

  • Jesus even washed the feet of Judas, who would betray Him. Who in your life is difficult to love or uncomfortable to be around? What is one small act of service you can offer by “taking up the towel” for that person?
  • As someone who has “already bathed” (a saved believer), how often do you take time to repent and cleanse the sins and impurities picked up from daily life (the washing of the feet)?
  • Jesus’ love is far more moving than any good deeds done by famous people. How do you usually “boast” about or testify to Jesus’ love to those around you?

4. Sharing Together

  • Share an experience when you were deeply moved by an unexpected act of service, or a time when you willingly did an unpleasant task and experienced God’s grace through it.

5. Pray

  • Lord, thank You for loving me completely and to the end, even though I am unworthy.
  • Help me to come before You daily, confess my sins, and live a life that is clean and holy.
  • As You did, help me lay down my pride and live a life of love that washes one another’s feet in my family, church, and workplace.
