Sermon Notes & Reflection Guide
1. Listening to the Word
- How are “the glory of the manger” and “the glory of the cross” connected in today’s sermon?
- What is the fundamental difference between the “Pax Romana” proclaimed by Caesar Augustus and the peace that Jesus gives?
2. Questions for Understanding the Passage
- How was the prophecy of the prophet Micah about 700 years earlier (Micah 5:2) fulfilled through the world-historical event of Caesar Augustus’ census decree?
- Through what specific event (the atonement) is the “peace on earth” praised by the angels given to us? (See Colossians 1:20; Romans 5:1)
3. Questions for Application
- In what areas of my heart is “Augustus” still sitting as the master, rather than the Lord?
- As we greet one another with “Merry Christmas,” let us once again reflect on the meaning of true joy and worship that we must confess.
- What repentance and commitment does it prompt in me today to remember that the baby lying in the manger came to pay the price for my sins?
4. Sharing Together
- Have you ever felt like you were being carried along by circumstances and events, only to later realize that it was part of God’s perfect plan? Please share your experiences.
- This week, who is the person you feel called to share the gospel with, proclaiming, “A Savior has been born for you”?
- Pray
- Lord, help me to step down from the throne of my life, and welcome the Jesus who came to the manger as my true King, so that I may obey Him.
- I thank You for Jesus’ atoning love, who bore God’s wrath in my place for my sins, and may I experience daily peace with You.
- Let the joy of Christmas not remain merely a festive celebration, but lead me to the life-giving mission of bringing lost souls to the Lord.
